- 1.Work out an estimate for 79.3 − 24.6, by rounding each number to the nearest whole number.
- 2.A jug holds 1.25 litres of water. Ella pours in another 400 ml. Work out the total volume, in litres.
- 3.A car travels 180 km using 6 litres of fuel. Work out the car's fuel consumption in kilometres per litre, then work out how many kilometres it can travel on a full tank of 12 litres at this rate.
- 4.A spreadsheet shows that 812 − 397 = 315. Work out an estimate for 812 − 397, by rounding each number to the nearest 100, to check whether the spreadsheet's answer is reasonable.
- 5.A number, n, is equal to 3.7 when rounded to 1 decimal place. Write down the error interval for n.
- 6.Write the fraction 47/50 as a decimal.
- 7.A gardener has 42 tulip bulbs and 56 daffodil bulbs. She plants them in rows, with every row containing the same number of tulip bulbs and the same number of daffodil bulbs, and no bulbs left over. Work out the greatest number of rows she can plant.
- 8.Two fair six-sided dice are rolled together. One die is red and the other is blue. Work out how many different outcomes are possible.
- 9.An allotment plot is divided into vegetables and flowers in the ratio 9 : 4. A third of the vegetable section is used for potatoes. What fraction of the whole plot is potatoes?
- 10.Round 0.0759 to 2 decimal places.
- 11.A fabric is dyed blue and yellow in the ratio 3 : 5. A tailor uses 1.5 m of blue fabric and the matching amount of yellow fabric needed for the ratio. Work out the total length of fabric used.
- 12.A country's population is 8,340,000, and it is estimated that 1,950,000 of them live in the capital city. By rounding each number to 1 significant figure, work out an estimate for the number of people who do not live in the capital city.
- 13.Write down the fraction, in its simplest form, that is equal to 0.6
- 14.A rectangular tile measures 45 cm by 0.6 m. Work out its area, in square centimetres.
- 15.Grace drinks 1/3 of a bottle of water in the morning and another 1/3 of the same bottle in the afternoon. Work out what fraction of the bottle she has drunk altogether.
