- 1.Expand and simplify 4(2x − 1) − 3(x + 2) − 5x
- 2.A person's body mass index is given by the formula B = m ÷ h², where m is the mass in kg and h is the height in metres. Work out B, to 1 decimal place, when m = 68 and h = 1.6.
- 3.A recipe gives the cooking time, in minutes, for a chicken as T = 40m + 20, where m is the mass in kg. A chicken has a mass of 1.8 kg. Work out the cooking time in hours and minutes.
- 4.Solve x² − 6x = 0.
- 5.Point P has coordinates (5, 2). Point P is rotated 180° about the origin to point Q. Write down the coordinates of Q.
- 6.Write down the expression that means 5 more than half of n.
- 7.Solve the inequality 3x + 6 ≤ 0.
- 8.Factorise 3x² + 10x − 8.
- 9.Factorise fully 12x² + 18x.
- 10.x = 5. Work out the value of 3x² − 4.
- 11.The graph of y = x³ − 5x is reflected in the y-axis. Work out the equation of the image.y = x
- 12.Solve the simultaneous equations y = x + 1 and x² + y² = 25, giving both pairs of solutions.y = x + 1
- 13.A closed cylinder has radius r cm and height (r + 5) cm. Its volume is 300 cm³, giving the equation πr²(r + 5) = 300, which can be solved using the iterative formula rₙ₊₁ = √(300 ÷ (π(rₙ + 5))). Taking r₀ = 3, work out r₃ correct to 2 decimal places.
- 14.The table shows the rate at which water flows from a tank, in litres per minute, over a 6-minute period: 12 at t = 0 min, 12 at t = 2 min, 3 at t = 5 min, and 0 at t = 6 min. Between t = 0 and t = 2 the rate is constant. Between t = 2 and t = 5, and between t = 5 and t = 6, the rate decreases at a constant rate in each section. Estimate the total volume of water that has flowed out, using the areas of a rectangle and two trapeziums.
- 15.Solve the simultaneous equations 3x + y = 14 and x + y = 6. Work out the value of x.
