- 1.A caterer uses the formula C = 6p + 20 to work out the total cost, £C, of a buffet for p people, where £20 covers fixed costs. A customer is charged £92. Work out how many people, p, the buffet was for.
- 2.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 2x + y = 8.
- 3.A tap fills a tank at a varying rate. A graph shows the rate of flow, in litres per minute, against time, in minutes. What does the area under this graph represent?
- 4.The graph of y = f(x) has a maximum turning point at (5, 8). Which of these correctly gives the corresponding turning point on the graph of y = −f(x + 1), and its type?
- 5.A quadratic graph y = ax² + bx + c has its turning point on the y-axis. Which statement about its roots must be true?
- 6.The formula y = x² + 1 gives y in terms of x. Work out the value of y when x = −2.y = x² + 1
- 7.Solve 4x − (2x − 6) = 18
- 8.A straight line passes through the points (2, 5) and (4, 11). Work out the gradient of the line.
- 9.Write down the expression that means the same as m² × m × 3.
- 10.The mean of four numbers is 12.5. Three of the numbers are 8, 15 and 19. Form an equation using n for the fourth number, and solve it to find n.
- 11.Solve 5(x + 3) = 40
- 12.f(x) = x³ − 3x − 20, and the equation f(x) = 0 has exactly one solution. Work out the pair of consecutive integers between which that solution lies.y = x
- 13.Points A(8, 15) and B(−8, 15) both lie on the circle x² + y² = 289, which has centre (0, 0). Work out the length of the chord AB.
- 14.The iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = 5 − 3/xₙ is used with starting value x₀ = 2.5, so that x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₄ correct to 3 significant figures.
- 15.A point has coordinates (x, y), where x + y = 0 and x is not 0. In which two quadrants could this point lie?
