- 1.A circle has centre (0, 0) and radius 9. Work out the equation of the circle.
- 2.A plumber charges a call-out fee plus an hourly rate for a job. The total cost, £C, for a job lasting h hours is given by the formula C = 40 + 25h. What does the number 40 represent in this formula?
- 3.Write down the expression that means the same as 'subtract 5 from n, then divide the result by 2'.
- 4.The braking distance of a car, in metres, is estimated using the formula d = 0.4v² + 6, where v is the speed in mph. A car travelling at 35 mph brakes. Work out the estimated braking distance.
- 5.The curve y = −x² + 6x − 5 has a maximum point. Use completing the square to find its coordinates.y = −x² + 6x − 5
- 6.Work out the value of 3x² − 4x when x = −2.
- 7.The first four terms of a sequence are 2, 6, 10, 14. Priya says the nth term is 4n. Work out the correct expression for the nth term.
- 8.Solve 2x + 7 = x + 13
- 9.Factorise x² − 3x − 10.
- 10.A coach company charges a booking fee plus a price for each passenger. A booking for 1 passenger costs £9, for 2 passengers costs £15, for 3 passengers costs £21, and for 4 passengers costs £27. Work out an expression, in terms of n, for the cost in pounds of a booking for n passengers.
- 11.A geometric sequence begins 162, 54, 18, 6, ... Work out the next term in the sequence.
- 12.A rectangular vegetable plot has an area of 30 m² and its length is 4 m greater than its width, x metres. This gives x² + 4x − 30 = 0, which can be solved using the iterative formula xₙ₊₁ = √(30 − 4xₙ). The starting value is x₀ = 3, so x₁ is the value after the formula has been used once. Work out x₃, and use it to find an estimate for the length of the plot, giving your answer correct to 1 decimal place.
- 13.By completing the square, find the turning point of the curve y = x² + 8x − 3.y = x² + 8x − 3
- 14.Harry will spend at most £150 on a party. The cake costs £60 and each helium balloon costs £3. Solve an inequality to find all the possible numbers of balloons, x, that he can buy.
- 15.Work out the gradient of the straight line with equation 3y = 12 − 6x.
