- 1.The formula connecting speed, distance and time is v = s ÷ t. Work out v, in km/h, when s = 180 and t = 4.
- 2.The equation x³ + 4x − 9 = 0 is to be solved by iteration. Work out which one of these iterative formulas comes from a correct rearrangement of that equation.
- 3.Two expressions are 4(x + 3) and 4x + 3. A student checks whether they are equivalent by substituting x = 2. Which statement correctly interprets the result?
- 4.A circle has centre (0, 0) and passes through the point (7, 24). Work out the equation of the circle.
- 5.A hiker's distance-time graph shows the following: he walks 5 km in the first 1 hour at a steady speed, rests for 1 hour, then walks a further 9 km in the next 2 hours, also at a steady speed. Work out his average speed for the whole journey, in km/h.
- 6.(2x + 3)(x + a) ≡ 2x² + 11x + 12 is an identity. Work out the value of a.
- 7.A circle has centre (0, 0) and equation x² + y² = 8. Work out the radius of the circle, giving your answer as a surd in its simplest form.
- 8.p = 4. Work out the value of 2p³.
- 9.Solve the simultaneous equations 2x + y = 7 and x + 2y = 8.
- 10.A car's speed-time graph shows the following: its speed increases steadily from 0 m/s to 20 m/s over the first 10 seconds, then stays constant at 20 m/s for the next 15 seconds. Work out the total distance travelled in the first 25 seconds.
- 11.A circle has equation x² + y² = 49. Work out the coordinates of the point(s) on the circle where the tangent is horizontal.
- 12.The cost, in pounds, of hiring a van for d days is given by the formula C = 25 + 18d. A customer's hire cost £133. Work out how many days, d, they hired the van for, by first rearranging the formula to make d the subject.
- 13.Solve the simultaneous equations 4x + 3y = 25 and 4x − y = 1. Work out the value of y.
- 14.A delivery van's distance-time graph shows the following: it travels 9 km in the first 15 minutes at a steady speed, stops for 45 minutes to unload, then travels a further 21 km in the next 30 minutes, also at a steady speed. Work out the average speed, in km/h, for the whole journey.
- 15.Factorise fully 5x + 5y − 5
