- 1.At a fun run, each runner finishes, retires or is disqualified, and cannot do more than one of these. The probability that a runner finishes is 68.5% and the probability that a runner retires is 24.75%. Work out the probability, as a percentage, that a runner is disqualified.
- 2.On a probability scale from 0 to 1, five descriptions are used: impossible (0), unlikely (between 0 and 0.5), evens (exactly 0.5), likely (between 0.5 and 1) and certain (1). The probability that a particular bus is late is 3/8. Which description best fits this probability?
- 3.The universal set is {1, 2, 3, ..., 15}. A = {multiples of 3}. Work out n(A′), the number of elements not in A.
- 4.A seed company tests germination using results from three greenhouses. Greenhouse 1 plants 200 seeds and 172 germinate. Greenhouse 2 plants 150 seeds and 126 germinate. Greenhouse 3 plants 250 seeds and 212 germinate. Using the combined results from all three greenhouses, work out the best estimate of the number of seeds, out of a new batch of 4000 seeds, that would be expected to germinate.
- 5.A fair coin is flipped three times. Work out the probability of getting at least one head.
- 6.Two ordinary fair dice are rolled and the two scores are added together. Work out the probability that the total is a prime number.
- 7.In a survey of 45 students, 22 said they like reading, 18 said they like gaming, and 6 said they like both. Work out how many students like exactly one of reading or gaming.
- 8.A call centre finds that 40% of its calls are about billing. 35% of the calls about billing are dealt with in under five minutes. The centre takes 500 calls on Monday. Work out how many of Monday's calls you would expect to be about billing and dealt with in under five minutes.
- 9.The probability that Leo wakes up before his alarm is 0.35. The probability that his younger sister wakes up before her alarm, independently of Leo, is 0.28. Work out the probability that neither of them wakes up before their alarm.
- 10.Two events are independent. The first has probability 2/5 and the second has probability 1/3. Work out the probability that both events happen.
- 11.In a year group of 60 pupils, 25 play football, 18 play tennis and 8 play both football and tennis. A pupil who plays football or tennis or both is picked at random. Work out the probability that this pupil plays both sports.
- 12.On the probability scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain), evens is exactly halfway. An event is 3/10 more likely than evens. Work out the probability of that event, giving your answer as a decimal.
- 13.A two-way table records 200 members of a gym. 80 of the members are women and the rest are men. 60 of the women attend yoga classes. Work out the percentage of the women who attend yoga classes.
- 14.A fair spinner has 8 equal sections: 5 are red and 3 are blue. Freya spins it twice, and each spin is independent of the other. Work out the probability that she gets one red and one blue in the two spins, in either order.
- 15.Spinner A has 4 equal sections, numbered 1, 2, 3 and 4. Spinner B has 5 equal sections, numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. Both spinners are spun once, and the two numbers are multiplied together. Work out the probability that the product is 12.
