- 1.A grower knows that the probability that one of their seeds germinates is 0.6. The grower wants to expect 300 of the seeds to germinate. Work out how many seeds the grower should plant.
- 2.In a group of 50 people, 32 own a car, 20 own a bicycle and 9 own both a car and a bicycle. A person who owns a bicycle is picked at random. Work out the probability that this person does not own a car.
- 3.A market stall sells umbrellas. Over the last 250 days, it rained on 70 of them. Using this as an estimate of the probability of rain, work out how many rainy days would be expected in the next 365 days.
- 4.On the probability scale from 0 (impossible) to 1 (certain), evens is exactly halfway. An event is 3/10 more likely than evens. Work out the probability of that event, giving your answer as a decimal.
- 5.Four bags each contain counters, some of which are winning counters. The probability of taking a winning counter is 5/12 from the red bag, 3/8 from the blue bag, 7/24 from the green bag and 1/3 from the yellow bag. Work out which bag has the smallest probability of giving a winning counter.
- 6.Jack rolls two ordinary fair dice and adds the two scores together. Work out the probability that the total is 6.
- 7.In a survey of 45 students, 22 said they like reading, 18 said they like gaming, and 6 said they like both. Work out how many students like exactly one of reading or gaming.
- 8.An ordinary fair dice is rolled twice. Work out the probability of getting at least one 5.
- 9.A two-way table records 200 members of a gym. 80 of the members are women and the rest are men. 60 of the women attend yoga classes. Work out the percentage of the women who attend yoga classes.
- 10.At a quiz night, each team's result is a win, a draw or a loss, and no team can have more than one of these results. The probability that a team wins is 42% and the probability that a team draws is 18.5%. Work out the probability, as a percentage, that a team does not win and does not draw.
- 11.A bag contains 4 red sweets and 6 yellow sweets. Two sweets are taken at random, one after the other, and are not put back. The first sweet taken is red. Work out the probability that the second sweet taken is also red.
- 12.In a trial, a drawing pin was dropped 80 times and landed point-up 52 times. Assuming this relative frequency continues, work out how many times you would expect it to land point-up in 300 drops.
- 13.In a board game Mia moves forward by the total of two ordinary fair dice. Work out the probability that her total is 7. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 14.A survey of 160 employees at a company recorded whether they cycle to work, using a frequency tree. The first branch splits them into 90 who work full-time and 70 who work part-time. Of the full-time employees, 27 cycle to work. Of the part-time employees, 14 cycle to work. Work out the probability that an employee, chosen at random from the 160, cycles to work. Give your answer as a fraction in its simplest form.
- 15.A charity raffle has three types of ticket: winning, near-miss and losing, and every ticket is exactly one of these. The probability that a ticket is winning is 1/8 and the probability that it is a near-miss is 1/4. Work out the probability that a ticket is losing.
