- 1.180 gardeners at an allotment were asked whether they grow vegetables organically. 100 of the gardeners are on the north plots. 64 of the north-plot gardeners grow organically. 30 of the south-plot gardeners do not grow organically. Work out how many south-plot gardeners grow organically.
- 2.A drawing pin is dropped many times and lands either point up or point down. The relative frequency of landing point up is recorded as the experiment goes on: after 50 drops it is 0.720, after 200 drops it is 0.665, and after 1000 drops it is 0.638. The pin is to be dropped a further 2000 times. Work out the best estimate of the number of times it will land point up.
- 3.On Amelia's walk to school there are two sets of traffic lights. The probability that the first set is green when she reaches it is 0.4. The probability that the second set is green when she reaches it is 0.5. The two sets work independently of each other. Work out the probability that both sets are green.
- 4.A ferry company finds that on 20% of days the sea is rough. If the sea is rough, the probability that a crossing is delayed is 0.75. If the sea is calm, the probability that a crossing is delayed is 0.1. Given that a crossing was delayed, work out the probability that the sea was rough that day.
- 5.The probability that a component is faulty is 1/10. Two components are tested independently. Work out the probability that at least one of the two components is faulty.
- 6.180 people entered a fun run. A frequency tree splits them into 108 adults and the rest children. It then splits each of those groups into those who finished and those who did not. 99 of the adults finished, and 153 of the 180 people finished altogether. Work out how many children did not finish.
- 7.A bag contains 3 yellow counters and 2 green counters. Sophie takes one counter at random and does not put it back. She then takes a second counter at random. Work out the probability that the first counter is yellow and the second is green.
- 8.At a gym, 70 members are asked whether they use the pool or the sauna. 38 use the pool, 30 use the sauna, and 12 use neither. Work out n(P ∩ S), the number of members who use both the pool and the sauna.
- 9.A quality inspector tests 145 light bulbs and finds that 33 are faulty. Work out the relative frequency of a bulb being faulty, as a percentage correct to 1 decimal place.
- 10.Of the 70 students on the Year 10 geography trip, 42 are girls and the rest are boys. 24 of the girls and 10 of the boys brought a packed lunch. A student who did not bring a packed lunch is chosen at random. Work out the probability that this student is a girl.
- 11.A = {factors of 12} and B = {factors of 18}. Work out n(A ∩ B), the number of elements in both sets.
- 12.A two-way table records 150 customers at a café. 90 of the customers bought a hot drink and the rest did not. 54 of the hot-drink customers also bought a cake. 21 of the customers who did not buy a hot drink bought a cake. Work out the percentage of all 150 customers who bought a cake.
- 13.A garden centre recorded 240 plant sales using a frequency tree. The first stage splits the sales into three types: shrubs, bedding plants and trees. 96 sales were shrubs, 114 were bedding plants and the rest were trees. Work out the probability that a sale chosen at random from these 240 was a tree.
- 14.In a class of 30 pupils, 18 study French, 14 study German and 7 study both French and German. A pupil who studies French is picked at random. Work out the probability that this pupil also studies German.
- 15.Two ordinary fair dice are rolled and the two scores are added together. Work out the probability that the total is a prime number.
