Times tables to 12 × 12 - the grid, the tricks and the Year 4 check

Fluent times tables by the end of Year 4 are the foundation for everything that follows - division, fractions, percentages, algebra. In England the target is every fact up to 12 × 12, checked in June of Year 4 by the Multiplication Tables Check. The Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

Every Year 4 pupil in England takes the Multiplication Tables Check in June. It is done on screen, it is short, and it is about speed as much as knowledge: the child has to recall the fact, not work it out. There is no pass mark - schools receive each child's score out of 25, and it is used to see who needs more support before Year 5.

  • Questions come from the 2 to 12 times tables. The 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables come up more often because they are the hardest.
  • The child types the answer on a keyboard or touchscreen. Six seconds is enough to recall a fact, not to count up or use fingers.
  • Schools usually run practice sessions in the same format. At home, the aim is the same: known facts, answered quickly, without working out.

Which times tables are learnt in each year?

Year 2
2, 5 and 10
Recall and use these tables and the related division facts. Counting in 2s, 5s and 10s starts in Year 1.
Year 3
3, 4 and 8
The 4s are the 2s doubled and the 8s are the 4s doubled, so the three new tables are taught in that order.
Year 4

How to help at home - six tips for parents

Multiplication is repeated addition: 3 rows of 4 make 3 × 4 = 12. Show the idea with an array before asking a child to memorise anything.
  1. Follow the school's order: 2, 5, 10, then 3, 4, 8, then the rest. Each table builds on an earlier one - the 4s are the 2s doubled, the 6s are the 3s doubled - so the order is not arbitrary.
  2. Teach the pattern, not just the list. 7 × 8 can be reached from 7 × 7 + 7; 12 × 6 is 10 × 6 + 2 × 6. A fact with a reason behind it survives the six-second clock far better than a fact learnt as a sound.
  3. Short and daily beats long and weekly. Five to ten minutes every day - in the car, at breakfast - does more than a Sunday-afternoon session.
  4. Practise the turn-around facts together. 6 × 7 and 7 × 6 are the same fact; saying both halves the number of things to learn and matches how the MTC asks them.
  5. Add the clock only once the facts are known. Speed practice on facts a child has not learnt just teaches guessing. First accuracy, then six seconds.
  6. Celebrate each table conquered. Recall is a long game; a table finished is worth marking, especially the 6s, 7s and 8s.

What is the Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check?

The MTC is an on-screen check taken in June of Year 4 in England. It has 25 questions drawn from the 2 to 12 times tables, with 6 seconds to answer each question and a 3-second gap between questions. There is no pass mark; schools receive each child's score out of 25.

Which times tables should a child know, and by when?

By the end of Year 2: the 2, 5 and 10 times tables. By the end of Year 3: the 3, 4 and 8 times tables as well. By the end of Year 4: every table up to 12 × 12, ready for the Multiplication Tables Check.

Which times tables are the hardest?

Most children struggle with the 6, 7 and 8 times tables, and in particular with 6 × 7, 7 × 8 and 6 × 8. They have no ending rule or simple doubling shortcut, so they need targeted practice. The 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables also appear more often in the MTC.

How long does it take to learn the times tables?

With short daily practice - five to ten minutes - most children reach fluent recall of a new table in a few weeks. Speed matters for the MTC, so once the facts are known, practise answering them in under six seconds.

Why do England's times tables go up to 12 rather than 10?

The national curriculum for England requires recall of multiplication tables up to 12 × 12 by the end of Year 4, and the MTC tests facts up to 12 × 12. Twelve also matches everyday units such as dozens, months and hours.
