The 10 times table
The 10 times table is the easiest in the grid and the most important: it is place value in action. Multiplying by 10 moves every digit one place to the left, which is why the answer 'gains a zero'. Taught in Year 2, it is the anchor for the 5s (half), the 9s (one less) and the 11s and 12s (one more, two more).

How to remember the 10 times table
7 x 10 = 70, 12 x 10 = 120. Each digit shifts one place to the left and a zero fills the ones place. That is the real reason for the 'add a zero' rule - and knowing the reason stops the rule going wrong with decimals later (2.5 x 10 is 25, not 2.50).
10, 20, 30, 40... Children count in tens from Year 1, so the 10 times table is just that count with 'times' in front of it. Ten fingers, ten toes, 10p coins - use whatever is to hand.
5s are half the 10s. 9s are the 10s take away the number. 11s are the 10s plus the number. 12s are the 10s plus the 2s. A child who is fluent in the 10s has a shortcut into four other tables.
- 10 x 11 = 110 and 10 x 12 = 120 - the only three-digit answers; the rule still works, the digits just shift
- Do not let 'add a zero' become a habit that breaks with decimals - say 'move the digits one place left' as well

When do children learn the 10 times table?
In Year 2, with the 2 and 5 times tables. Counting in tens starts in Year 1, so most children find this the first table they know 'for free'.
Is it wrong to teach 'just add a zero'?
It works for whole numbers but breaks with decimals (0.3 x 10 is 3, not 0.30). Teachers prefer 'the digits move one place to the left'. Use the rule if it helps, but say the reason alongside it.
