The 8 times table
The 8 times table is the 4s doubled, which is the 2s doubled twice - 'double, double, double'. It is a Year 3 table, taught after the 4s for exactly that reason, and it holds two of the facts children find hardest in the entire grid: 8 x 7 and 8 x 6. Learn the pattern and they fall into place.

How to remember the 8 times table
8 x 6: double 6 is 12, double again is 24, double again is 48. Three doublings turn any number into its 8s fact. Slow at first, but it always works and needs no memory at all.
8 x 7 = 2 x (4 x 7) = 2 x 28 = 56. If the 4s are secure, every 8s fact is one doubling away.
8, 16, 24, 32, 40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96. The last digit counts down in twos - 8, 6, 4, 2, 0 - while the tens digit climbs. Once children see it, the sequence chants itself.
8 x 9 = 10 x 9 - 2 x 9 = 90 - 18 = 72. 8 x 12 = 120 - 24 = 96. Multiplying by 10 and subtracting the 2s is a fast method for the top of the table.
- 8 x 7 = 56 - 5-6-7-8, or double 28
- 8 x 6 = 48 - double 24, or the even rule from the 6s (ends in 8, tens digit 4)
- 8 x 8 = 64 - a square number: 'eight times eight fell on the floor, picked it up, it was sixty-four'
- 8 x 12 = 96 - 80 + 16, or 120 - 24
