The 6 times table
The 6 times table is where the 'hard tables' start - it has no ending rule and no doubling shortcut. But it hides two useful facts: every 6s answer is double the 3s answer, and when you multiply an even number by 6, the answer ends in that same even number. It is a Year 4 table.

How to remember the 6 times table
6 x 7: 3 x 7 = 21, doubled is 42. 6 x 8: 3 x 8 = 24, doubled is 48. Every 6s fact is the matching 3s fact doubled, which is why the 3s are taught first.
6 x 2 = 12, 6 x 4 = 24, 6 x 6 = 36, 6 x 8 = 48. When you multiply an even number by 6, the answer ends in that even number - and the tens digit is half of it. A genuinely useful pattern for the four even facts.
6 x 7 = 5 x 7 + 7 = 35 + 7 = 42. Children who know their 5s can reach any 6s fact by adding one more group. It also explains the answer instead of just labelling it.
6, 12, 18 - 24, 30, 36 - 42, 48, 54 - 60, 66, 72. Grouping the chant in threes gives it a rhythm that sticks.

What are the multiples of 6 up to 72?
6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72. Every one is a multiple of both 2 and 3, so it is even and its digit sum is 3, 6 or 9.
When do children learn the 6 times table?
In Year 4, when the national curriculum requires all tables up to 12 x 12. The 6s are usually taught soon after the 3s are revisited, because they are the 3s doubled.
Why is the 6 times table so hard?
It has no ending rule like the 5s and no simple doubling like the 4s, and it contains the two facts children miss most: 6 x 7 and 6 x 8. Use double-the-3s or five-lots-plus-one until the facts are automatic.
