The 5 times table
The 5 times table is the friendliest in the whole grid: every answer ends in 5 or 0, and children already meet it on the clock face when they learn to tell the time in five-minute intervals. It is taught in Year 2 and most children pick it up in days.

How to remember the 5 times table
Odd number times 5 ends in 5 (5 x 3 = 15, 5 x 7 = 35). Even number times 5 ends in 0 (5 x 4 = 20, 5 x 8 = 40). If an answer ends in anything else, it is wrong.
5 x 8: 10 x 8 = 80, half of 80 is 40. 5 x 12: 10 x 12 = 120, half is 60. Because 5 is half of 10, every 5s fact is half the matching 10s fact - and the 10s are the easiest table there is.
The minute hand on 3 means 15 minutes past; on 7 it means 35 past. Telling the time in five-minute steps, which is a Year 2 objective, is the 5 times table in disguise. Practise both together.
Five fingers on a hand: 3 hands is 15 fingers, 6 hands is 30. Counting in fives on hands makes the table concrete for children who are not ready for abstract recall.
- 5 x 7 = 35 and 5 x 9 = 45 - the two odd facts children mix up most; 5 x 7 is half of 70, 5 x 9 is half of 90
